SIMPLI.FLY

SIMPLIFY , a mathematical terminology in which
it makes a algebraic expression easily understandable and solvable.
Simplify, in general, also means making things accessible ,
easy and uncomplicated for everyone.
in addition, our Social Issue is mostly composed of math ,
so might as well use it. However , we added a twist by changing it to FLY
instead of FY. We wanted to be a source of hope to all the students out
their who are experiencing hardships in Math. We try to make things
more bearable and easy for the students by simplifying what is hard for
them. know that you are not alone, because a lot of students
are going through the same and we are here to help you believe that you can.

WHAT IS MATH ANXIETY?

Mathematics is a global topic and subject, where in so much a part of life that everybody who engages in society must have a fundamental understanding of the subject. Mathematic anxiety is one of the psychological barriers that students encounter, that includes the lack of capacity for a person to cope up with quantification, uneasiness when asked to perform mathematically, and a feeling of trepidation when it comes to mathematical circumstances. it is also defined as a feeling of tension and apprehension that interferes with maths performance ability, the manipulation of numbers and the solving of mathematical problems in a wide variety of ordinary life and academic situations. Low mathematic achievement was found to be strongly associated to later high levels of anxiety in a previous study, whereas earlier high math anxiety was found to be scarcely related to low math achievement. Mathematic anxiety was found to be one of the effects of decreased mathematics achievement in a previous study. Dislike, anxiety, and dread are the most common feelings associated with mathematics, with particular behavioral manifestations including tension, downshifting, discomfort, and mental disorder. Which is obvious that the correlation of mathematics anxiety towards students is highly positive. Most students hesitate the aim their dream professions and limiting their choice of career due to avoidance of mathematic classes.

HISTORY

(Math anxiety was first studied academically in the 1950s, when Mary Fides Gough coined the term mathemaphobia to characterize the phobia-like sentiments many people have toward mathematics. Richardson and Suinn created the first math anxiety measuring scale in 1972.)

POPULATION

Math anxiety affects nearly half of the population in the United States, with more women than males suffering from it. Researchers have shown that arithmetic anxiety begins at a young age. They've seen it in youngsters as young as five years old, and they've found that early worry snowballs, leading to math difficulties and avoidance that only become worse as children get older.

CAUSE

The teacher is the primary source of math anxiety. It has been proven that students internalize their instructor's interest in and excitement for teaching arithmetic (Jackson and Leffingwell, 1999). If the teacher has a negative attitude toward mathematics, his students are likely to have the same attitude.

Did you know?

Mathematics anxiety and self-efficacy are relatively well-researched, there are several uninvestigated terrains. In particular, there is little research on how mathematics anxiety and mathematics self efficacy are associated with deep (more comprehensive) and surface (more superficial) approaches to learning among STEM and social sciences students. The aim of the current work was to provide insights into this domain. Since most domains rely on using mathematical thinking, one could argue that mathematics is an important component of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Tobias and Weissbrod (1980) defined math anxiety as "panic, helplessness, immobility, and fear of failure." When some people are asked to answer a mathematical problem, their minds get disorganized. It is considered a "major concern" that affects a big section of the community. Jones (2001) discovered that 26% of 9000 American pupils reported moderate to high levels of math anxiety, according to Perry (2004). At least modest math anxiety was reported by students in introductory math classes. Mathematical knowledge is a crucial factor for students' success in future careers (Claessens & Engel, 2013; Konvalina, Wileman, & Stephens, 1983). However, because mathematics is widely perceived to be difficult (Fritz, Haase, & Räsänen, 2019), research on teaching and learning mathematics has gotten a lot of attention over the years. There has been little research on the relationships between mathematics anxiety, mathematics self-efficacy, and mathematics achievement. Comparing learning styles among STEM and social science students in the context of mathematical education Do pupils who have a higher level of mathematics anxiety also have a higher level of mathematics anxiety? disparities in mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics self-efficacy Between STEM and non-STEM students, there is a difference in anxiety and learning styles

  Possible Effects and            Symptoms of
        Math Anxiety

Effects on the brain

uneasiness when asked to perform mathematically

They have less mental health power, resulting to anxiety

Physical symptoms include, racing heart, rapid breathing, shaking, sweating, biting of nails, and a general feeling of uneasiness.

the lack of capacity for a person to cope up with quantification

feeling of trepidation when it comes to mathematical circumstances.

Emotional symptoms such as a sense of helplessness, loss of confidence, and fear of making mistakes.

Frustration when it comes to not knowing how to solve problems and never getting the right answers.

LET'S ADVOCATE !

Most of the students are wanting to pursue their dream of becoming an Engineer, Accountant, Business Man and many more, someday but scared to take the profession because of the thought that the course is most likely compose with mathematics, which hold them back. This study explores the source or factors related to mathematics anxiety among engineering students. To all the students who are holding their back in taking their dream in becoming an Engineer, worry no more. You don’t really have to be good in mathematics, in fact, no one is born that in a blink of an eye they are already good in math.  It is a process of learning and practice until you get better. Believe that you are capable of anything with confidence, determination, discipline and perseverance you’ll get there. Not everyone will like math, but if you help yourself in order to see the relevance of the subject to your daily life you can defeat and overcome your fear towards the subject. Know that learning is an unending process.  Do not look and think of the subject as if it’s too scary because your mind will be settled with that. but try to look at it the other way around and embrace it, and that will help you to build a better relationship towards the subject.

Tips!

Be involved

Student success in school has been shown to increase if their parents are positively involved in their education

Encouragement a growth mindset

Effort trumps ability when it comes to learning math, set high expectations when encouraging your child.

Be positive about math

A parent perception of mathematics influences not only their child’s feelings about math but also their child’s achievement

Learn basics

Rate learning essential to mathematics performance as many higher level concepts build on the memorization and repetition of the basic math facts.

Allow mistakes

Focus on the concepts rather than the right answer, since making (and correcting) mistakes is an essential part of math learning.

Take baby steps

Support new topics by slowly explaining it, use gradual, repeated success to build math confidence

Make math relevant to real life

Highlight ways in which you and your family use math in everyday life and discuss how good math skills will open the doors to a larger choice of career options.
